The biggest hurdle for creatives, entrepreneurs, coaches and business owners is not a lack of creativity or vision, but rather achieving some success and quitting. They subconsciously get stuck in a cycle of achieving success and relaxing just for the sake of it limit their own options.
The term “success” is subjective and a matter of your own opinion, but a hunger to achieve more is what will take you to the next project. The key is to develop the mindset where you never settle for less than what you can be.
1. Be your own motivator daily
Motivation is internal and is your best tool to influence your environment or the external environment. The key is not to let the events around you affect your inner being. This means taking charge and being responsible for what you have control over. Knowing your why and your purpose can help you act strategically and motivate you to let your guard down.
You know yourself better than anyone. Only you can answer what your goal is and how far you want to go with your success. If you want success, you must take massive action to overcome obstacles as they arise. From distractions to setbacks to momentary failures, you need to stay focused and stay ahead. This creates resilience. You create your own life and how far you go is up to you.
There will always be storms at sea, but you will be able to survive by having a plan of action. This is why you need to set goals and stick with them to achieve them.
2. Keep your goal clear
Defining your purpose and reflecting on your past will help you realign yourself with your vision. Remind yourself of your goal and check in with yourself to make sure you’re reaching your goals. Again, your goals are yours alone and being honest with yourself will help you determine if you are where you need to be.
Too many people give up because they lose sight of their goals, or don’t move on until halfway through. You need to know your why and make sure your actions match the completion of your goals because no one will complete them for you.
By having a clear why, you have a clear path ahead. Knowing the road ahead helps you know what to do next and keeps you engaged and ready to move forward. All you have to do is act, and you will instinctively know what to do because you have reminded yourself of your vision.
3. Imagine (and stick to) a timeline
Your timeline is the overall progression of your life. Imagine a timeline to remember your past
create your own milestones. It’s also a way of connecting the dots, so to speak, and giving you a trajectory for your next step. Think about it this way. You graduate from high school, go to college, find a job, and eventually get a promotion. However, this is where most people stop, because eventually people settle down because society tells them that you are now successful (by society’s standards).
By having a vision of your own success, you create your own timeline and determine the steps to get there. Let’s say you want to start a YouTube channel. Your first goal may be to reach 10,000 subscribers. Then you can reach 20,000 subscribers, 50,000 subscribers, and 100,000 subscribers by the end of the year. The key is to continuously evolve and raise the bar from the previous one, rather than taking your foot off the gas once you reach a certain point.
4. Think about your past
To be clear, remembering your past is not the same as living in your past. Remembering and reflecting on your past is a form of self-reflection that helps you redefine who you are and who you want to become. This works in several ways. First, you can use the past to remember your mistakes and avoid making the same mistakes.
But it can also give you the motivation to build on your past achievements and fuel further greatness. By digging deeper, you can create a bigger vision and act on the momentum you’ve created from your memories.
By harnessing the power of your past, you can learn from your mistakes and transform your positives to become an even greater person. This will open the doors to reach your full potential. As long as you use the past as a teaching tool, you can use it to complement your strengths and gain momentum on your journey forward.
5. Every day is a new day
Although it sounds simple, every day is a new day to learn from the past and start the day off right. Having a solid start is one of the best ways to stay motivated, because today gives you the strength to start over. If you treat each day as a new beginning, you will be more motivated to move forward and strive for it all the time. Remember: today is the first day of the rest of your life.
Most people have New Year’s resolutions, but those who want to beat the average can use each day as a fresh start to get better. It’s a mindset hack to motivate you to seize every day and turn it to your advantage. By starting each day with a positive attitude and willingness to learn, you create positive momentum that will take you far in any life endeavor. It will also give you the tenacity to overcome any obstacle in your way because you will not get bogged down by life’s trials.
6. Focus on impact, not income
Most people work for a salary, usually 40 hours a week with some overtime. However, trading dollars for hours on end will rarely generate the greatest impact. When you start a business and focus on impact, it changes your organization’s purpose and work efforts for the better. Impact is people-centered and life-changing, while a paycheck mindset often boils down to doing the bare minimum.
If you build a business to serve as many people as possible, you can set your goals and measure them to measure your success. As your business grows, you can raise your goals, create more learning materials, and take the business in a new direction. You need to consistently raise the bar to ensure you create the biggest impact possible, rather than doing the bare minimum to collect a paycheck.
Being your own boss is one of the best ways to make an immediate impact on your target audience while continuously building a following. By creating something like an online course, you are serving others by helping them achieve their goals.
7. Never, never peak
It’s okay to celebrate success, but always strive for more. Celebrate, but don’t fall asleep at the wheel. Entrepreneurs achieve success by staying hungry and knowing there is always more to do and learn.
I’m not saying you should never be happy. In fact, a hearty party is a great way to reward yourself for reaching your goals. The problem is when you get caught up in the celebration and use it as a crutch to justify laziness and procrastination.
Again, a reminder that everyone is different and that your ideas of success are ultimately yours alone. The point I am making is that there is always more and we should keep striving to reach new heights. Suppose you have reached one million subscribers. Reach your next milestone now so you don’t lose the momentum you gained by settling down and resting in your comfort zone.
Complacency is the hidden killer of success because it operates under the false premise that you have reached your full potential and there is nothing left to achieve. However, you can always create something new and remain the solution in someone else’s life. By knowing your purpose and maintaining a crystal clear vision, and being your own motivator, you can forever influence others and reach new heights.
This is a life worth living.
